1 Month

Harper is one month old today!

It hardly seems possible that her first month has already come and gone. The fact that she wasn't even due to arrive for another couple of weeks from now and the fact that she's only been home with us for 2 weeks makes it seem so unreal that she is already one month old. Time is really going by too fast for my liking and it's hard not to feel that twinge of sadness mixed in with all of the bliss.

At her 2 week check up she was already up to 5lb. 8oz. and grew an inch to 19in. I took her for a weight check yesterday and I'm so happy that she's steadily packing on the pounds and weighed in at 6lb. 12oz.! Her doctor was very impressed and gave us the green light to continue to breast feed exclusively now without worrying if she's getting enough at her feedings. SO HAPPY! It's funny because I was telling her how proud I am of her "fattening up" and that she's getting so big and then I realized that she's still 2+ lbs under what Harrison weighed at birth. Ha! I love my itty bitty doll baby. :)  Sidenote: the outfit she's wearing in her picture up there is the same outfit I bought to bring Harrison home from the hospital in. Except that it never fit on my chunky butterball. And at a month old, it still swallows Harper up!

So Harper, what have you been up to this month?

I can't lie and say I'm not disappointed that I feel like your first two weeks were stolen from us. Even though we made several trips to visit you every day you were in the hospital we still missed you terribly when we couldn't be with you and were desperate to get you home. But I am so grateful you were where you needed to be to get and stay healthy. You had a team of great doctors and nurses taking good care of you and the sweetest volunteers who would come cuddle and read to you when we couldn't be there. And when it was finally time to bring you home it was so special because we definitely didn't take your homecoming for granted!

You had your first bath when you were 2 weeks old. You hated it! But only the first; now you seem to really enjoy them.

Your first week of life you were fed through an IV and then through a feeding tube. Week two we introduced the bottle. Week three we alternated between bottle feeds and nursing sessions and I am SO happy that now we are officially nursing exclusively! Your brother never nursed well and I spent 10 months pumping and bottle feeding him. I am sure loving the bonding time I'm getting with you. And the not-having-to-pump-and-wash-bottles part is pretty nice, too. ;)

You have reflux, but so far it's been a lot more manageable than Harrison's was. I say that and I SOOO hope it really stays true, because the last 2 days it has been terrible. You've been really fussy and spitting up a lot more than your normal. You even had a massive projectile episode that I'm pretty sure may have trumped anything your brother ever produced in force. I am really praying that it is just an upset tummy and passes soon because the thought of going through this again is awful...for you and for us! I think it may be a bug or something because this afternoon I started feeling really lousy as well.

You are nursing every 3-4 hours and I usually have to wake you up to eat night. I'm not getting much sleep these days because it takes you forever to wake up enough to start eating and keep you awake for a full feed. But once my Skinny Minnie gains enough weight we will be able to drop the night feedings, which I think will make us both much happier.

You are really an easy baby! You don't cry very often but you do grunt and groan a lot. I'm not sure if it's just you making noise for fun or if you are having gas issues. Your daddy calls you Grunty and I call you Groany Joni. Other than your noises you are pretty low maintenance. You sleep a lot and of course aren't mobile yet and I really have to laugh at myself for feeling so overwhelmed when Harrison was a newborn, because this phase is easy peasy compared to the toddler stage!

Harper, we are so blessed that God chose us to be your family. You've only been here a month but I feel like I've known you my whole life. You are the perfect addition and we all love you so very much!
