12 Months {Deep Breath}

Today my baby is a year old!

1 year. 12 months. 365 days. And it all flew by in what felt like a single blink of an eye.

I know, Buddy. It makes your Momma sad, too.

He weighs about 23 lbs.

He is 30 inches tall.

So Harrison, what have you been up to this month?

You became a walker! You took your first steps on Nov. 12 and are doing so great. Shoes throw you off a little, but you're getting the hang of it. Sometimes it gets challenging because you are so proud of yourself and reeeeally don't want to be held, which isn't always practical when we are out in public. Such a Mr. Independent!

Your 3rd and 4th teeth came in, and you have two more trying to break through your gums. You have been cranky with a capital C-R-A-N-K-Y, and have shown no effort in holding back that mighty temper of yours. So far you have 3 bottom teeth and 1 top tooth.

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to.

You are such an explorer and into EVERYTHING. You are relentless sometimes, and it's very exhausting chasing you around all day! Just when we think we've child-proofed the house, you prove us wrong.

What do we have here?

They think they can fool me? I don't think so!

I'll just take this out and suck it down my windpipe, thankyouverymuch.

We are in the process of weaning you from the bottle and it's been challenging. You are down to 2 bottles a day, one in the morning and one right before bed at night, but I'm at a loss for how to break you of those. The problem is that you refuse to drink milk out of a cup. At first I thought it was just because you didn't like the taste of cow's milk, but then I put it in a bottle and you scarfed it down (but you will only drink your bottles while we hold you right before you go to sleep - you, my lazy little boy, have never once held your own bottle). You will drink juice and water out of sippies just fine, but with milk you take one drink, make a disgusted face and spit it out, and then throw your cup on the floor.

I sure am thirsty.

Um, excuse me? What is THIS?

I can't believe you would do this to me!

Mommy, why are you trying to make my life miserable?

Here are a few more things I want to remember about you at this age:

- Your favorite game to play right now is Find Mommy's Bellybutton. This is a game that you made up all on your own, trust me. You lift up my shirt (and have embarrassed me on more than one occasion by trying to do it in public) and poke me in the bellybutton. I am extremely ticklish and HATE the feeling of being poked in the bellybutton, and apparently my reaction to being poked in the bellybutton is why you love poking me in the bellybutton so much.

- You can now follow simple commands, such as "bring me the ball" or "push the button." However, you refuse to follow simple commands like "no" and "don't touch that." I'm pretty confident you understand what "no" means though, because you stick that pouty bottom lip out and cry when I say it to you. But then the cry turns into a devious smile as you continue right on doing what you are being told "no" to.

- You have discovered your nostrils and love to just hang out with your finger parked up them. You aren't fishing for boogers, but it's still gross nonetheless.

- You really love to dance. So far you are a huge fan of Christmas music and clap and sway to the beat. It's so cute...especially since it looks like you've inherited your daddy's sense of rhythm. Poor baby. :)

- You have recently developed separation anxiety. If we leave the room, or heaven forbid, shut the door behind us, you have a huge meltdown. The same is true for when we drop you off at the nursery. It's hard to leave you when you cling to my neck (because it's the only time you ever cling to my neck), but you calm down as soon as we're gone and get to playing with the other babies.

- Your favorite toys at the moment are your new Cozy Coupe car your daddy and I got you for your birthday, your slide, your ball popper, your tool bench, your legos, and your sand castle toys and shovels (which you like to bonk me on the head with). And also anything you're not supposed to be playing with, of course. :)

You continue to fill our lives with joy and it's so much fun to experience life through your eyes.

Harrison, you are quickly growing up and there's no denying it. But while the calendar says you are leaving your babyhood behind, your Mommy needs you to know something. I don't care if you are 1 or if you are 12 or if you are 36, you will always, always, always be my baby. Today greets me with a twinge of sadness as I say goodbye to the best year of my life to date, but more importantly I am excited to celebrate the boy you've become and look forward to the privilege of watching you grow up. Happy birthday, my sweet son. We love you so very much!

That's so funny! He and Cavan are doing/have been doing so many of the same things!

Especially, the fingers in the nose (nasty!!!) and the pulling up of mommy's shirt and poking the bellybutton (WHAT is UP with that???).

Can't believe he's been here a whole year already! Seems like he's been here forever, and just a short while all at the same time.
